While forever lauded for his mesmerizing vocal range, Axl Rose had to endure having his name and reputation dragged through a virtual meat-grinder, the media and the mass public opinion having decided him guilty for the fracture in his rock n' roll group, Guns N' Roses, and its multiple lineup changes. Rose had been labeled a greedy dictator with a colossally bloated ego, who allegedly incited riots, engaged in various narcotic and domestic abuses, and filed a multitude of lawsuits against former friends and associates.

My belief is that throughout his entire life, Axl Rose has been searching for his “peace” in this world through the only means he knows, musical performance. Mysterious and remote forces have fueled this man and given him the confidence and the skill to perform before the masses, those millions of paying fans, moving them emotionally and psychologically.

"Reckless Child" is based on Axl's young life, and through dramatic form, examines his experiences of being trapped in an unfortunate and abysmal upbringing, ruled by an an abusive, tyrannical father, only then to flee from his home to far across the country where he could create his band, his new, happy family.

GENESIS FOR "RECKLESS CHILD"

In a 1990 interview, Rose mentions his Pentecostal church upbringing, which ignited my theory that his distinctive style was bred in that institution's intense environment. The film, "Holy Ghost People" gives an intimate glimpse inside a small, country Pentecostal church.

PROCESS

Because of my own time being raised in the church by its minister and its organist, I have been fascinated by Axl's vocal choices that he utilizes and his unwavering sense of conviction that he enforces.

Uncovering Axl's story required journeying as he had, across the US, from Washington Heights in New York City to Rose's hometown of East Lafayette, Indiana and ultimately, deep into the seedy corners of Los Angeles, California. Friends, neighbors and band members from AXL's past to his present disclosed invaluable ideas, impressions and images from their time with him, generating a wonderfully rich depiction of the rock star's story.

The initial idea was to write the Guns N' Roses story, following each of the players as kids to how they joined each other, into their infamous club shows on the Sunset Strip sparking their massively popular success and on to where the band splinters off, leaving AXL alone to find a new group of players for continuing on with the band.

In researching their early histories, I befriended several of Axl's early band mates, including the lead guitarist from Hollywood Rose, Chris Weber, and the lead guitarist and songwriter of Axl's first LA band, Rapidfire, Kevin Lawrence. Kevin's best friend and lawyer, Joshua Solomon, who wanted to meet with me initially, played for me the then unreleased music from 1983, and I was dumbstruck by how remarkable the music and particularly Axl's voice sounded. On those tapes, was a thrilled and terrified boy, surrounded by strangers in a strange land, never to return to his home, and just on the edge a world stardom explosion. Axl's time in Rapidfire and in the first incarnation of Hollywood Rose became the key focus for the script, as it appeared to be a micro parallel to any of the Guns N' Roses many periods.
